Innovation Transforming Health and Sports Monitoring

Discover RM4HEALTH, an innovative initiative revolutionising remote monitoring in health and sports by developing technological solutions that promote an active lifestyle, thereby enhancing quality of life.

The ageing population and the rise in chronic illnesses have placed significant pressure on healthcare systems worldwide, leading to escalating and often unsustainable costs. According to the World Health Organisation, over 6 million people, including athletes and patients, face injuries and chronic illnesses annually. It is within this context that RM4HEALTH – Remote Monitoring in Health and Sports emerges. Led by WISEWARE and co-funded by COMPETE 2030, this operation aims to transform how health is monitored and managed.

Approved by the European ITEA4 Programme, RM4HEALTH seeks to accelerate innovation in wearable electronic devices by creating open technological platforms for continuous monitoring of vital signs. This initiative addresses technological and economic challenges associated with the “Valley of Death”, reducing costs and accelerating the development of solutions for the health and sports markets.

In healthcare, remote monitoring enables more effective preparation for disease prevention and post-treatment recovery by providing tools that support healthcare professionals and patients.

RM4HEALTH builds on the work carried out under the INNO4HEALTH initiative, which also developed technologies addressing challenges in health and sports domains.

This new initiative, underpinned by long-standing partnerships alongside new collaborators, includes an international consortium comprising 18 partners from four countries: Finland, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

Focus on Elderly Remote Monitoring in Portugal

Nationally, the project concentrates on remote monitoring of elderly individuals in care homes or their own residences to tackle the growing challenges of an ageing demographic.

The national consortium includes:

  • WISEWARE, focusing on the development, integration, and interoperability of non-invasive monitoring technologies;
  • Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Vagos, providing access to the target study population and technical expertise in geriatrics;
  • Porto School of Engineering (ISEP), responsible for the platform and data security;
  • Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, focusing on data analysis collected from the elderly and conducting validation studies.

Overcoming Wearable Device Limitations

Recognising limitations in existing wearable devices, such as a lack of long-term records and limited data integration, RM4HEALTH proposes developing an intelligent health monitoring ecosystem. This system enables remote observation and support for elderly individuals, ensuring better quality of life and more efficient care.

The main objectives of the national consortium include:

  • Monitoring medication intake, with alerts to ensure elderly individuals follow prescriptions correctly;
  • Access control and location monitoring to detect unauthorised exits or behavioural changes, enhancing resident safety;
  • Analysing daily activity patterns to identify routine changes, unexpected events, and sleep quality;
  • Implementing a communication/assistance system between elderly individuals and caregivers;
  • Integrating data from multiple sensors into a centralised platform, allowing caregivers and family members to access relevant health information;
  • Implementing robust security measures to protect personal data in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

By combining these initiatives, RM4HEALTH aims to provide innovative and personalised solutions, offering a safer and more efficient service for both the elderly and their caregivers, generating alerts in case of unexpected events.

This initiative seeks to enhance how elderly care and monitoring are conducted. By monitoring vital signs, medication intake, and daily activity patterns, it becomes possible to promptly notify unexpected events, prevent the worsening of chronic health issues, and provide families and caregivers with information to support care decisions.

A Model of Health and Sports Innovation

RM4HEALTH exemplifies innovation applied to health and sports, with the potential to transform how populations are monitored and supported in various contexts, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future.

Support from COMPETE 2030

The initiative received support from COMPETE 2030 under the SIID – Internationalisation of R&D, involving an eligible investment of €1,240,217 and resulting in €1,010,765 in FEDER funding.
