The Chairman of the Board of Directors presented COMPETE 2030 and projects co-funded by COMPETE 2020 in the area of health, at the round table ‘Portugal 2030, a new horizon and a new hope’.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Nuno Mangas, was a speaker at the event commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Research Centre of the Local Health Unit of the Region of Leiria, to present COMPETE 2030 and projects co-funded by COMPETE 2020 in the area of health, at the round table ‘Portugal 2030, a new horizon and a new hope’.

The congress took place in the auditorium of the Escola Superior de Saúde de Leiria, and featured a multidisciplinary programme that brought together specialists from a wide range of areas, health professionals and researchers from more than two dozen institutions to discuss the latest scientific advances and best practices in the field of health. Themes such as artificial intelligence in medicine, digital health, sustainability in health and the role of research and robotics were some of the highlights.

Founded in 2014, the Leiria Research Centre has been a driving force behind health research and sustainability in the region, being involved in various projects that promote scientific and technological knowledge.

COMPETE has contributed to the development of an economy based on innovation, supporting national projects in science that aim to improve healthcare in our country, particularly in Leiria.

For example, Bio4Cartilage, a joint research project between the Leiria Hospital Centre and the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPL) for the prevention and treatment of cartilage lesions and joint degeneration. It consisted of an integrated intervention programme for the prevention and treatment of cartilage lesions and a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of joint degeneration. It also included a physical exercise programme to reduce pain and increase patients’ functional independence, and the optimisation of the engineering of biomaterials and bioprocesses for more suitable joint prostheses.

Also worthy of recognition is Help2care, a strategic mobilising project led by the IPL, which developed networking and used synergies between partners in the region, involving students, teachers and stakeholders to create a model for training carers and dependent people in self-care.

This model included the production of a manual to support the carer (in paper, audio and digital format) with accessible text and images, digital platforms (website and app) and a manual with the carer/dependent person empowerment model.

COMPETE 2030 congratulates all the team members and partners of the Research Centre of the Local Health Unit of the Leiria Region for a decade dedicated to science that has resulted in innovative and strategic projects that help improve patient care and drive innovation in the health sector in Portugal.
